Local Roundup: Dixon volleyball team notches first BNC victory

The Dixon volleyball team cruised to a 25-8, 25-14 win over North Boone on Thursday at Lancaster Gym to pick up its first Big Northern Conference win of the season.

Mallory Coley had six kills, five digs and a block for the Duchesses (10-10-1, 1-4), while Ainsley Govig spiked three kills, Joey Brumbly added two kills, and Ella Govig had three blocks and a kill. Sam Tourtillott added two kills, six digs and two aces, and Holli Miller dished four assists and served three aces. Olivia Cox had a kill and two blocks, Elena Castillo-Wetzell chipped in 10 digs and two aces, and Hanna Lengquist had seven assists and two digs.

Byron def. Oregon 16-25, 25-22, 25-20: The Hawks battled on the road, but lost a Big Northern Conference match in three sets.

Jenae Bothe had 12 kills, three blocks and an ace. Ava Wight had nine kills and 11 digs. Sophie Stender had 24 digs and three aces.

Sherrard def. Erie-Prophetstown 25-17, 21-25, 25-15: The Panthers pushed the Three Rivers West-leading Tigers to three sets but could not pull out the win.

Kennedy Buck led Erie-Prophetstown with 13 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Isabelle VanOosten served a pair of aces. Jaiden Oleson had 24 assists. Hailey Bush had three blocks. Emma Davis had eight digs.

Milledgeville def. Polo 26-28, 25-12, 25-16: The Missiles rebounded after dropping the first set to beat the Marcos in three.

Alyssa Mertz had six aces for Milledgeville to go with 22 assists, five kills and two digs. Emma Foster had 11 kills and 17 assists. Carissa Hubbard had 10 digs. Lydia Faulkner had 11 kills and three aces.

AFC def. Amboy 16-25, 25-21, 25-17: The Raiders topped the Clippers in an NUIC match in Amboy.

Brianna Gonnerman had five kills and 12 assists, and Lyla Fike added five kills and two digs for AFC. Taylor Jahn stuffed the stat sheet with two kills, two blocks and eight digs, Ellah Dorn finished with three kills, six digs and six aces, and Kate Bass chipped in four digs and four aces.

Elly Jones led Amboy with seven kills, 13 digs and five aces, while Lexi Ketchum had six kills and nine digs. Courtney Ortgiesen served four aces, and Tyrah Vaessen dished 17 assists.

Forreston def. Eastland 26-24, 25-16: The Cougars dropped an NUIC match to the Cardinals in Lanark.

Jaiden Schneiderman slammed 15 kills for Forreston, and Brooke Boettner added six kills and 15 assists. Kara Erdmann finished with 13 digs and two aces, and Keeli Larson stuffed three blocks.

West Carroll def. Warren 25-23, 25-9: The Thunder eked out a first-set win, then cruised in the second.

Alee Schleuning served seven aces and had five kills. Tori Moshure had 15 assists. Lacey Eissens had seven kills and two blocks. Kendal Asay had five kills and two blocks. Aspen Eizenga and Haylee Sheppard each had five digs.

Girls tennis

Dixon 4, Newman 1: The Duchesses beat the Comets at the Emma Hubbs Tennis Courts in Page Park.

At No. 1 singles, Dixon’s Chloe Coil beat Sarah Tunink 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Newman’s Marisel Schalck beat Miriya Jones 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles, Dixon got a 6-0, 6-0 win from Leah Kuehl and Grace Ferguson over Julie Rhodes and Emma Oswalt. Dixon’s Addison Arjes and Kyarra McGlown beat Cecilia Sagel and Joy Zigler 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Dixon’s Leah Stees and Siena Kemmeran beat Sarah Murray and Maria Ardis 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Boys soccer

Sterling 5, Ottawa 0: The Golden Warriors pitched a shutout in a nonconference win at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Oregon 2, Freeport 0: The Hawks picked up a nonconference road win.

College volleyball

Willman receives honors: Sauk Valley Community College sophomore Michal Willman was named the NJCAA Division II Offensive Player of the Week.

The Skyhawks hitter averaged 5.78 kills per set and had a .457 attack percentage for the week.
