A rollover crash involving a dump truck closed a portion of Route 31 because of a fuel leak Tuesday evening, according to the Richmond Township Fire Protection District.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office warned motorists about 6 p.m. Tuesday to avoid Route 31 at Solon Road, south of Richmond.
The fire district received a call about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and responded within six minutes to that intersection, finding a “dump truck with a trailer and other road equipment” rolled over with a “significant” fuel leak on the Richmond Township Road District parking lot, according to news release. A pickup trick also sustained “minor damage” from the crash.
The driver of the dump truck was removed from the vehicle by bystanders before first responders arrived. The truck driver and the occupants in the pickup truck were assessed by paramedics, and they all declined transport to nearby hospitals, according to the release. Crews upgraded the incident because of the fuel spill and requested a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 5-Hazmat box alarm, according to the release.
The fuel leak cleanup was conducted by a private towing agency and assisted by the Richmond Township Road District, according to the release. A portion of Route 31 was closed for about three hours after the crash.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District, the Richmond Police Department and other agencies assisted in the response and cleanup.
