Boil order lifted in Wonder Lake

A boil order issued for parts of Wonder Lake was lifted early Sunday afternoon.

The boil order took effect Monday and affected the west side of the village.

The village was handing out bottled water until 2 p.m. Sunday.

Now that the boil order is lifted, the village is advising residents who were affected to run all cold-water faucets one at a time for five minutes each. Those with large or complex plumbing systems may need to flush for longer.

After flushing the system, residents should replace filters, including disposable water filters and carbon filters, as they might have been contaminated during the boil order.

Those with reverse osmosis systems should replace the pre-filters and consult the owner’s manual for additional steps.

Water softeners should be run through a regeneration cycle. Existing ice from ice makers should be thrown out, and people should make one to two new batches of ice cubes, discarding each batch.

The village is urging residents to clean and sanitize appliances connected to the water supply such as dishwashers, coffee makers and soda dispensers. Each home should flush the hot water tank and drain from the bottom of the tank to remove sediment. Nothing needs to be done for toilets.

“By taking these steps, you can help ensure your home’s water system is clean and safe after the boil order is lifted,” according to the village website.

The boil order was first issued Monday for residents on the west side of the village after coliform bacteria was detected during monthly testing. Wonder Lake Mayor Dan Dycus said earlier the boil order would stand through at least Sunday.

For the boil order to be lifted, there needed to be two consecutive days of clean tests. A sample from Well No. 5 taken Thursday had coliform and reset the clock.

Clean tests came back Friday and Saturday. Saturday, “we were hoping that would be the case,” Dycus said.

Dycus said there still is more work to do on the water system, including addressing iron content concerns, but noted “we’ve been underneath” the iron limits.
