As a partner in the international DAISY award program that recognizes the clinical skill and compassionate care of nurses, OSF HealthCare St. Elizabeth Medical Center recently presented its DAISY award to Nikki Beyer, RN.

Beyer, who joined OSF HealthCare more than a year ago, provides inpatient care at OSF St. Elizabeth in Ottawa. A resident of Peru, she has been recognized for her unwavering commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality care, OSF said in a news release.

Heather Bomstad, vice president and chief nursing officer for OSF St. Elizabeth, expressed gratitude for the daily contributions of compassionate RNs and emphasized that the DAISY award is a meaningful way to acknowledge the dedication of individuals like Beyer.

“Nikki was on duty as our dad’s nurse for several days, and she was so wonderful to our family during a difficult time,” Beyer’s nomination said. “My dad was there as his organs were failing, and she treated him with respect and dignity while also making him smile with her jokes. We had to begin making end-of-life decisions for him while he was there, and she was kind to us — always bringing us tissues, water, and anything else we needed.

“The icing on the cake was when my dad was taken off his renal diet and could order whatever he wanted. He really wanted a hotdog, but it wasn’t on the hospital menu. Suddenly, Nikki showed up with a hotdog and fries that she had delivered from a local restaurant because she knew how much he wanted it! She was an angel for us during a tough time.”

The DAISY Award program is present in more than 2,000 healthcare facilities across all 50 states and 14 other countries. OSF HealthCare encourages patients, family members and staff to recognize caregivers who have provided exceptional care by nominating them for this prestigious honor.
