The Grand Ridge Village Board addressed questions and concerns that residents had Tuesday about the change to a single trash hauler for the community.
During the board’s meeting last month, trustees voted to make Waste Management of Illinois the sole trash service provider for Grand Ridge residents.
Previously, residents were able to choose from various waste-collection companies, including Republic Services and Michael Disposal Inc.
Grand Ridge Village President Kay Hines said the decision to switch to one trash hauler was made to preserve the streets and gravel alleys by reducing the number of trucks traveling through the village.
“The goal was to reduce truck traffic and ultimately protect our roads,” Hines said. “We had trucks from at least three different companies coming through every week, and it was taking a toll on the streets.”
According to a letter initially sent to residents, Waste Management would begin servicing the village in April.
Hines acknowledged, however, that mistakes were made in the communication and service now will start Tuesday, Feb. 4, leaving some residents who already have paid for a separate service in a difficult position.
“I take full responsibility for the confusion,” Hines said during the meeting. “The goal was to make the transition easier, but I know I’ve caused some frustration, and I apologize.”
Hines assured residents that she already had spoken with the other garbage companies and was told that any residents who paid in advance for the next three months would be refunded.
“If you’ve already paid for service through another company, they should reimburse you for the overpayment,” Hines said. “Waste Management will be sending containers to every home, even for those who opt out, and will pick them up if the opt-out request is approved.”
More than 20 residents submitted opt-out forms already, and the board reviewed each individual application during the meeting.
Eighteen residents were approved to opt out, while three were denied.
Residents who operate a business or own property with an existing waste disposal contract are likely eligible to opt out. However, all denials were for residents trying to combine trash services with neighbors or continue using a different provider.
The new rates for Waste Management will be $20.50 per month per household, with a 5% increase annually for the next two years until the contract expires in 2027.
Beginning Feb. 4, residents will be required to use the 96-gallon containers provided by Waste Management.
Waste Management trucks will pick up trash on Tuesdays, and residents are asked to have their trash at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on collection days. Any trash outside these provided bins will not be collected.
For residents who want to opt out, visit the village’s website download page to access the form, fill out the paperwork and mail it to Grand Ridge Village Hall, P.O. Box 745, Grand Ridge, IL 61325, or email grvillageclerk@gmail.com.
All opt-out requests will be reviewed by the board during its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.
