Pirates card a 298, hold a 13-shot lead heading to Saturday’s final round

The Ottawa boys golf team, with a record score of 219, captured the title of the Mendota Ryder Cup Tournament for the fourth consecutive year at Mendota Golf Club on Saturday.

Ottawa boys golf leads after first round at Class 2A state meet: At Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal, the Ottawa Pirates shot a 298 in Friday’s opening round of the Class 2A state meet and hold a 13-shot advantage over second place Nazareth Academy (311), with Normal University and Benton tied for third with 313s. Marmion Academy is currently fifth with a 314.

Ottawa junior Jacob Armstrong led the way, firing a 1-over-par 72 and is in seventh place individually. Classmate Colt Bryson shot a 74 and is in 14th.

Senior Chandler Creedon (75, 15th) and sophomore Bryer Harris (77, 27th) added counting scores, with freshman James Threadgill (82, 64th) and senior Seth Cooper (83, 69th) rounding out the Pirates’ scores.

Ottawa High School has qualified for the IHSA state finals as a team nine times in school history – 1938, 1973, 1986, 1998, 1999, 2012, 2021, 2023 – but has not brought home a state championship. That could change Saturday.

The second and final round begins Saturday morning and will conclude Saturday afternoon.

Fieldcrest’s Schultz advances to Day 2 of 1A state tournament, Seneca’s Stenzel has season end: At Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur, Fieldcrest senior Jessica Schultz advanced to Saturday’s second round after shooting an 84 to finish the opening round of the Class 1A state tournament tied for 25th place. Schultz had seven pars and a birdie in her round.

Fighting Irish sophomore Piper Stenzel finished the season after carding a 105.

Girls tennis

Ottawa’s Moreland qualifies for state meet: At the Henderson-Guenther Tennis Facility, the Pirates Zulee Moreland qualified for the Class 1A state meet after defeating Streator’s Garvi Patel (6-2, 6-0) and Coal City’s Rebecca Hall (6-2, 6-4) at the Ottawa Sectional.

Moreland will face L-P’s Grace Pecchio in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Ottawa’s Yaquelin Hernandez-Solis defeated Kankakee McNamara’s Rozalie Stipp (6-0, 6-0) but fell to La Salle-Peru’s Eva Cervantes. Streator’s Annika Michlik’s season also ended as she lost to St. Bede’s Bailey Engels (6-3, 6-1) after topping Mendota’s Cassie Gonzalez (7-6 (1), 6-2).

In doubles, Streator’s Maddie Wahl/Joyce Walkling defeated Ottawa’s Gabby Cooper/Reese Purcell (6-1, 7-5), but fell to L-P’s Izzy Pecchio/Kylee Halm (7-5, 6-1). The Bulldogs’ duo of Indyana Hernandez/Isabell Gutierrez lost to Coal City’s Bridget Fenney/Lanie Winke (6-1, 6-2), while the Pirates team of Rylee Harsted/Brooklyn Byone dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Pontiac’s Brooke Burger/Olivia Masching.

Boys soccer

Somonauk-Leland-Newark co-op 2, Indian Creek 1 (2 OT): At Somonauk, the host Bobcats scored with 1:42 left in the second overtime in the win over the Timberwolves in the Class 1A Somonauk Regional semifinals.

S-N-L advances to Tuesday’s 6 p.m. championship match where it will face Hinckley-Big Rock, which was a 2-0 winner over Westminster Christian in the second semifinal.

Football

Ridgewood 42 FCW 14: At Cambridge, the Falcons dropped to 5-3 on the season with the loss to the Spartans.

Tuscola 43 Fieldcrest 0: At Tuscola, the Knights fell to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in Heart of Central Illinois Small Conference play with the loss to the Warriors.
