Gun found in student’s vehicle parked at Plainfield East High School: cops

A student was arrested at Plainfield East High School after officers found a 9 mm pistol in her vehicle, police said.

Serena Cail, 18, of Romeoville was identified by police as the student who was arrested in connection with the incident. She was taken to the Will County jail on probable cause of aggravated battery to a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon.

About 9 a.m. Monday, school staff requested assistance from the school resource officer for Cail, who smelled of marijuana, police said.

Cail’s vehicle was parked in the Plainfield East lot and staff asked the officer to search it, police said.

When officers arrived, Cail attempted to get in the driver’s seat and then moved around items after an officer asked her to exit the vehicle, police said.

After Cail exited the vehicle and waited for officers to search it, she walked to one of the vehicle’s doors and again got in, police said.

“The student reached towards the floor of the vehicle. The officer attempted to restrain the student but the student resisted and kicked the officer,” police said.

After the arrival of additional officers, Cail was arrested and a search completed, police said.

Officers found a loaded 9 mm pistol under the front passenger seat of the vehicle that had no serial numbers, police said.

The firearm was consistent with those described as “ghost guns,” police said.

Ghost guns are unmarked firearms assembled from kits that are sold without background checks, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
