Occupational therapist thinks “outside the box” when it comes to patient care

Morris Hospital named Jenny Kumrow its Fire Starter of the Month for January 2022

Morris Hospital recently named inpatient occupational therapist Jenny Kumrow as its Fire Starter of the Month for January 2022. Kumrow is known for her dedication to patients and her ability to creatively think outside of the box.

Morris Hospital inpatient occupational therapist Jenny Kumrow already had 25 years’ experience in the hospital and nursing home setting when she came to Morris Hospital in 2015, according to a news release from Morris Hospital.

And Kumrow really enjoys helping patients with their recovery and said in the release that she sometimes has to “think outside the box” in order to motivate her patients “to get moving.”

“It’s definitely rewarding when patients can get up and get dressed after breaking a hip, or when they have an a-ha moment after realizing they can do something on their own and no longer feel helpless,” Kumrow said in the release.

Morris Hospital recently named Kumrow its Fire Starter of the Month for January 2022.

Renee Joder, the physical therapist who nominated in Kumrow, said in the release that Kumrow “cares deeply about her patients, her co-workers, and the success of Morris Hospital.”

“To watch Jenny in action is to observe a true professional who wants to make a difference,” Joder said in the release.

Sarah Wrightson, manager of rehabilitation services at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, said in the release that Kumrow is calm focused, reliable and “brilliant in a quiet way, never seeking recognition.”

“Jenny has a way of connecting with people and takes a very individualized approach with each patient by trying to find out something personal about them,” Wrightson said in the release.

Kumrow’s ultimate goal, of course, is giving her patients any resources they need to function on their own. She helps patients who’ve had strokes, surgeries or lengthy hospitalizations dress and groom themselves.

She’s bought multiple pairs of eyeglasses from the dollar store so patients can read menus and order their own food. She’s brought them reading material and puzzle books to keep them occupied. And she takes the time to listen.

“Finding a way to give them their independence is important,” Kumrow said in the release. “So is just sitting and talking to them about their family or things they like to do. It takes them out of the hospital for a little and brings them to their happy spot.”

Hospital staff also appreciate Kumrow. Joder said in the release that Kumrow is a “legend when it comes to bright ideas to make the hospital experience better for everyone.”

“Her ability to think outside the box not only in patient care but also in hospital improvement situations make an awesome impact on our department and the hospital,” Joder said in the release.
