The annual Christmas ‘basket’ program is just one of the many community outreach programs of the longtime club

The Plainfield Lions Club recently made the holidays happier for 159 Plainfield-area families, according to a news release from the club.

These families, 845 people, received $34,250 in Jewel gift cards from the club, the release said.

The annual Christmas “basket” program is just one of the many community outreach programs of the club, now in its 72nd year, the release said.

Larry Wiers, who’s chaired this program for the last 23 years, said in the release that the Plainfield Lions Club has helped approximately 14,000 people with $341,050 in food gift certificates,

The Plainfield Lions Club hosts fundraisers through the years to pay for the Christmas Basket program, along with eyeglasses and eye care to those in need, Wiers said in the release.

The basket program also received funds from the Plainfield Friends of Charitable Giving and the 17 community donors, the release said.

A crew of 50 Plainfield Lions Club members will deliver the gift certificates on Dec. 18, the release said.
