Morris Hospital giving away free wigs to cancer patients with hair loss

People may feel upset about losing their hair due to cancer treatment and turn to wigs.

However, the American Cancer Society’s website said that “Medicare Parts A and B do not cover the cost of wigs for people going through cancer treatment.” Wigs might be a tax-deductible expense, the website said.

Sometimes private insurance companies cover part of the cost with a prescription from the doctor for a hair or cranial prosthesis, the website said.

That’s why the Radiation Therapy Center at Morris Hospital offers a free boutique. The boutique is for anyone who has hair loss from a cancer diagnosis – even if a person isn’t getting cancer treatment at Morris Hospital, according to a news release from Morris Hospital.

Each free wig-fitting consultation comes with one free wig [patient’s choice] and a custom-made wig stand, the release said.

As part of the consultation, people will learn how to find wigs that fit their lifestyle and tips for using wigs, scarves and turbans, the release said.
