Northern Illinois Food Bank honors 2 Channahon volunteers

The Northern Illinois Food Bank's South Suburban Center opened Friday, May 4, 2018, in Joliet, Ill.

In April, the Northern Illinois Food Bank awarded seven volunteers for “extraordinary service” over this past year, according to a news release from the food bank.

Two of those volunteers live in Channahon.

Carol Ferguson of Channahon, who’s volunteered for the food bank for eight years, received the Legacy Award from the Food Bank’s South Suburban Center in Joliet. Ferguson has given more than 1,200 volunteer hours, according to the news release.

Ferguson had started her service in 2013 in Geneva but moved to the South Suburban Center when it opened in May 2018, becoming first volunteer and, later, its first volunteer supervisor.

A retired register nurse, Ferguson has also helped give administer COVID-19 vaccines through the Will County Health Department.

Amy Winters of Channahon received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Food Bank’s South Suburban Center in Joliet. At the time of the award, Winters had served 635 hours, according to the news release.

Winters started volunteering at the food bank in June 2019 and was soon coming in to help several times each week.

She not only became the volunteer supervisor, she’s attended every Rx Mobile in Joliet, which runs every other Thursday.

Director of Volunteers Shannon Thompson said in the news release the seven award winners often worked extra shifts to help “sort, pack and distribute food.”
