The Plainfield Police Department on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in Plainfield, Ill

A Plainfield man barricaded himself inside his residence with a firearm after leaving the scene of a single-vehicle crash, police said.

On Sunday, officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle on Renwick Road, west of Drauden Road, according to a statement from the Plainfield Police Department.

The 41-year-old male driver had struck a light pole, and it is “unknown what caused the driver to strike the light pole,” police said.

The driver and three children inside of the SUV were not injured, police said. After the crash, the occupants of the vehicle had left the area on foot.

During the investigation of the incident, officers received information indicating that the 41-year-old man had barricaded himself inside a residence in the 25400 block of Springview Court while in possession of a firearm, police said.

A perimeter was established around the residence, and officers from the Joliet Police Department’s Special Operations Squad were called to the scene to provide assistance, police said.

A reverse 911 notification was issued to nearby residents, police said.

Joliet police officers were able to “establish communication” with the man, who surrendered without further incident, police said.

The man, who may have had a mental health episode, was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
