A teen in Plainfield was ambushed by his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend and another person in a July 5 incident where he was shot multiple times, according to prosecutors.
The investigation of the shooting led to the arrest of Joseph De Dios, 18, of Romeoville, on a charge of attempted first-degree murder and several other charges.
De Dios was arrested on Thursday at the Jack in the Box restaurant, 2101 Illinois Route 59.
Officers responded to the shooting about 10:45 p.m. July 5 for a person who had been shot “multiple times near Plainfield Village Hall (which backs up to Settler’s Park),” according to a petition to deny De Dios’ jail release from Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The 17-year-old victim told officers that his ex-girlfriend asked him to go with her into a public bathroom at Settler’s Park and two masked people struck him in the head and shot him “multiple times in his arms and legs,” prosecutors said.
As the victim was loaded into an ambulance, he stated, “I was set up,” prosecutors said.
Officers interviewed witnesses who claimed the victim’s ex-girlfriend said De Dios wanted her to take the victim to a forest preserve where she would “lure him outside” and De Dios and his friends “were going to kill him,” prosecutors alleged.
“She also stated [De Dios] wanted her to see her ex-boyfriend scream out for help,” prosecutors alleged.
The victim told police he brought a handgun because he believed the way his ex-girlfriend contacted him and wanted to meet up was suspicious, prosecutors alleged.
The victim said he drew his pistol from his waistband when he was attacked by the two masked people at Settler’s Park and one of them told the victim, “Why are you talking to my girl?” prosecutors alleged.
The victim’s ex-girlfriend told police that when De Dios found out the victim had been texting her, De Dios wanted to rob and beat up the victim “out of respect” and “out of jealousy,” prosecutors alleged.
