Two Joliet residents die in crash

A single-vehicle crash in Joliet resulted in the death of the driver and the passenger.

Norman J. Wetherbee, 67, of Joliet and the driver of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of Westminster Road in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The passenger, Beverly Wetherbee, 75, of Joliet, was pronounced dead at 11:18 p.m. Friday at Prime Healthcare’s Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

At 5:57 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 1100 block of Westminster Road for a report of a single vehicle crash with injuries, according to a news release from The Joliet Police Department.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 67-year-old man with a 75-year-old woman passenger, both of Joliet, was traveling north on Westminster Road from Clara Avenue when the vehicle veered off the street to the east, police said.

The Jeep then struck multiple trees, causing the vehicle to roll over and come to rest in a front yard of a residence, police said.

The passenger was freed from the vehicle and taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department in critical condition, police said.

The driver also was freed from the vehicle but showed no signs of life after an evaluation by paramedics and was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Will County Coroner’s Office, police said.

This crash remains under active investigation, police said.

An autopsy was performed on Saturday, according to the coroner’s office.

Final cause and manner of death will be determined by the coroner’s office following autopsy, police and toxicological reports.
