A Frankfort man and woman were identified as the people who were killed in a three-vehicle crash near Peotone involving a garbage truck.
Richard Wayt, 77, and Kathleen Wayt, 63, were pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday following a crash in Peotone Township, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.
The crash involved two passenger vehicles and one garbage truck.
The crash occurred at U.S. Route 45, south of Offner Road, which is northwest of Peotone and southwest of Manhattan.
The Wayts were the only two occupants of a Buick Enclave that was traveling south on U.S. Route 45 while in front of a Buick Envision, according to Illinois State Police.
The Buick Envision was driven by 56-year-old woman from Bourbonnais and occupied by a 40-year-old man from Bradley, a 32-year-old woman from Bourbonnais and a juvenile, police said.
For “unknown reasons,” the Buick Enclave occupied by the Wayts had “crossed from the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes,” police said.
The Buick Enclave then struck a garbage truck that was traveling north on U.S. Route 45, police said.
The truck was driven by 38-year-old man from Aurora, who was the sole occupant, police said.
After the Buick Enclave crashed into the garbage truck, the Buick Enclave then collided with the Buick Envision driven by the Bourbonnais woman, police said.
The Wayts were declared dead on scene.
The driver of the garbage truck, the driver of the Buick Envision and two of her passengers were taken to a hospital with injuries, police said.
