Joliet — Joliet police are investigating a crash that injured two people and are looking for a driver who fled the scene.

Police responded to the crash at 2:56 a.m. Sunday near North Chicago and Benton streets, according to a news release from the Joliet Police Department.

The preliminary investigation of the crash found that a Chevrolet Aveo and a Saturn Aura were both traveling south on Chicago Street approaching Benton when the Saturn is believed to have collided with the back end of the Chevrolet, causing it to roll over near the intersection, according to the release.

The crash resulted in multiple injuries, Joliet Police Public Affairs Sgt. Dwayne English said.

The Saturn’s driver, who has not been identified, exited his vehicle and ran, abandoning the vehicle, English said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 34-year-old man, suffered minor injuries but declined transportation to the hospital, English said.

A 43-year-old male passenger of the Chevrolet needed to be freed from the vehicle by the Joliet Fire Department and was taken to Ascension Saint Joseph - Joliet Hospital in critical but stable condition, English said. The man later was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for further treatment, he said.

Police believe those involved in the crash were also involved in an altercation Saturday night at Los Gavenos bar, at 1101 N. Hickory St., however the investigation is ongoing, English said.

Anyone with information or video footage about the crash is asked to call the Joliet Police Department Traffic Unit at 815-724-3193
