Joliet — The Joliet Township government is making it easier for residents to bring new four-legged friends home for the holidays this year by waiving adoptions fees at Joliet Township Animal Control.

Through Dec. 31, Joliet Township Animal Control, located at 2807 McDonough St. in Joliet, will waive all adoption fees for dogs – which usually range from $75 to $125 – and offer discounted microchipping services for dogs and cats.

The “Homes for the Howlidays” event “aims to help dogs find loving forever homes and promote responsible pet ownership,” according to a news release from the animal control.

Waiving the adoption fees is meant to make it easier for families to welcome a new pet. Adopters will, however, still need to pay medical fees for the dogs “to ensure they receive the care they need before joining their new family,” according to the release.

Medical fees through the township usually cost about $160.

As an additional measure to keep pets safe, all animal microchipping fees have been reduced to $10 through the end of 2024. The small devices are implanted under pets’ skin and hold an identification number, which is registered to the pet owner.

If a lost pet is found, the chip can be scanned by a vet or shelter to find the owner and reunite the animal with the family.

“We know the holiday season is a time for family, and dogs make wonderful additions to homes looking for love and companionship,” Joliet Township Animal Control Director Whitney McGill said in the release.

“Through ‘Homes for the Howlidays,’ we’re excited to connect more dogs with families and promote responsible pet ownership,” McGill said.

More information about the event and a list of pets available for adoption is available at the Joliet Township Animal Control website, joliettownshipanimalcontrol.net.
