Oswego man named as Aurora shooting suspect who died in Will County

The suspect in a shooting in Aurora who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Will County has been identified as a man from Oswego.

Jeffrey Emerson, 56, of Oswego, was pronounced dead at 11:40 a.m. Monday in the 21000 block of Cottage Road in Wilmington from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Emerson was found during a traffic stop by deputies with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office on Cottage Road. He left his vehicle and fired a gun at himself, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Deputies tried to deescalate the situation and asked the suspect to put the weapon down, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Will County deputies arrived on scene and worked with Grundy County deputies in clearing the vehicle for officer safety and administering life-saving measures for Emerson, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies performed CPR on Emerson but he died.

At 7:31 a.m. Monday, Aurora police officers were sent to the 700 block of Charles Street for a disturbance inside a home.

A 911 caller reported a man armed with a gun inside the residence, according to the Aurora Police Department. Officers heard a gunshot from inside the home when they arrived and the front door opened.

A 43-year-old woman left and said she’d been shot, police said.

The officers rendered aid and turned the woman over to paramedics. An Aurora Fire Department emergency crew took the woman to a local hospital for treatment, where she was listed in serious condition as of late Monday afternoon, police said.

Emerson left the scene while officers tried to establish a secure perimeter around the home, and officers requested further assistance from the Aurora Special Response Team, police said.

The police department’s Special Response Team found no one inside the home and officers identified the vehicle within minutes of the shooting, sharing that information with police agencies statewide, police said.
