Traffic slows as first snow covers highways

Cars with headlamps lit move slowly across the Peoria Avenue bridge and approach the stop light at First Street in Dixon during the noon hour on Tuesday after the first two hours of snowfall and an accumulation of more than an inch.

Traffic in downtown Dixon moved slowly but steadily over the noon hour as drivers adjusted to conditions brought on by the season’s first real snow on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities posted an updated map showing the line cutting across Interstate 80 the marked the line between snow to the north and the wintry mix of freezing rain and rain to the south.

The Illinois Department of Transportation Winter Road Conditions map showed that I-88 west of Sterling was completely covered by snow and ice. Most main roads in Carroll County were also covered by snow.

Other roads across the Sauk Valley were only partially covered, the report said.
