Byron’s Exelon employees contribute time, money to local causes

The Byron Exelon Generating Station will be retired in September 2021, Exelon announced Aug. 27. The Dresden plant in Morris will close that November, and the La Salle and Braidwood nuclear stations also are at high risk for premature closure, the company said.

BYRON — Nuclear power plant employees at the Byron Generating Station pledged more than $143,000 to 138 charities during this year’s giving campaign.

The station’s workers have also volunteered more than 560 hours this year through local organizations.

Organizations supported include veterans’ groups such as Darkhorse Lodge, Carpenter’s Place and Veterans Drop-in Center, youth scouting organizations, school groups, and multiple United Way agencies.

“One in every two people in Ogle County depends on United Way funded services. Those services wouldn’t be available without the generous support of Exelon and its employees,” said Alan Jones, Ogle County director of the United Way of Rock River Valley. “Their contributions provide long-term solutions to community issues, changing lives and providing hope in Ogle County.”

The donations will be distributed throughout 2022.

“Our employees believe strongly in giving back to the communities in which they live and work. Their generous donations help provide resources for area charities that serve families in need and continue to make a difference for many who have been affected by the pandemic and other economic stresses,” said Dave Rhoades, Exelon Generation Chief Nuclear Officer.

Collectively, Exelon Generation workers in Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland contributed $2.9 million to 2,200 different charities. Coupled with grants from the Exelon Foundation, contributions were more than $4.3 million.
