The local boys swimming season came to an end on Day 1 of the IHSA State Finals in Westmont, as none of the five area competitors advanced to the finals or consolation finals, nor did either of the two Erie-Prophetstown girls at the state wrestling meet.
A senior from Morrison will be making his third appearance at the IHSA Boys Swimming State Finals this weekend in Westmont. A Dixon freshman will be competing for the first time.
The Sauk Valley women's basketball team defeated College of DuPage 73-66 on Monday night in a nonconference game in Dixon.
Oregon senior Ava Wight had a strong second day at the IHSA Girls Bowling State Tournament on Saturday to finish 31st, while Dixon senior Grace DeBord stayed in relatively the same position from Day 1 and placed 43rd at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford.
DeBord had a 222 opening game in a 566 series in the morning, then finished off an afternoon series of 583 with games of 221 and 214. Her Day 2 total of 1,149 gave her a two-day score of 2,306 in her first trip to the state tournament.
In the final sectional meet of his high school career, Skylar Drolema wanted to set the tone for his Sterling teammates. The Morrison senior did just that, and he ended up making a statement by earning state berths in two events at the United Township Sectional on Saturday.
The Dixon girls bowling team finished second at the Dixon Regional with a total pinfall of 5,141 on Saturday at Plum Hollow, advancing the entire team to the Decatur Sectional. Sterling will send a pair of individuals, while Oregon's Ava Wight won the Freeport Regional title.
Oregon’s Gavvin Surmo and Dixon’s Clark Bonnewell both placed in the top 13 individually Saturday at the Rockford Guilford Sectional, and earned two of the seven individual advancing spots for next weekend’s state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
The Newman girls basketball team picked up its second straight Three Rivers East win, defeating St. Bede 46-33 on Thursday night in Peru. Also, the Eastland, Polo and Fulton boys basketball teams all won, as did the Sterling girls bowlers and boys swimmers.
The Byron co-op visited the Duis Center to take on Sterling on Tuesday afternoon, and both teams were looking to have some fun against some familiar faces – as well as cut some time and come away with bragging rights. The Water Warriors won the dual 87-72.
