Lake in the Hills’ Sunset Skate Park reopens with new equipment; basketball court added to Cattail Park

A reopened Sunset Skate Park features a beginner-friendly area as well as an area for intermediate to advanced skaters, scooter riders and bike riders, Lake in the Hills village officials said.

The village’s Public Works Department planned to replace the equipment at Sunset Skate Park this year, as the original equipment had reached the end of its 20-year lifespan based on the industry standard and the equipment’s assessed condition, according to a news release.

Early this year, staff surveyed community members to gauge their interest in potential features and to narrow down design concept options before a final design was selected. American Ramp Co. was selected as the vendor.

“With the modernized equipment, Sunset Skate Park will continue to be a popular spot for recreation for years to come,” Superintendent of Public Properties Scott Parchutz said in a statement.

The skate park, 5200 Miller Road, reopened to the public Aug. 6, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Sept. 21.

A new basketball court also was installed at Cattail Park off Albrecht Road, according to the village. The court was built adjacent to the playground.

“Our staff is eager to make improvements to parks, facilities, sports courts and recreation spaces,” Public Works Director Tom Migatz said. “The new court expands the village’s existing basketball facilities that include full and half courts at Barbara Key, Ken Carpenter, Sunset, Leroy Guy, Jaycee, Stoneybrook and Lynn Dillow parks.”
