Gas leak shuts down McHenry intersection

The city of McHenry is considering options to make the Curran Road/Dartmoor Drive intersection safer. The intersection, seen here on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, has seen seven crashed in three years, including one were a child was hit in December 2023.

Drivers were being advised to avoid the area of Curran Road and Dartmoor Drive in McHenry.

The intersection is closed, and Nicor is on scene because of a gas leak, McHenry police said in an alert Thursday afternoon.

It is not clear how long the intersection will be closed, police said. Those needing to access the Legend Lakes subdivision should use Draper Road to do so, police said.

A Nicor spokesperson said a natural gas pipeline in the 700 block of Legend Lane was damaged during work not related to the utility company. Nicor was informed of the damage at 11:52 a.m., and the first responder got to the scene at 12:18 p.m. Thursday, the spokesperson said.

Nicor crews were still on scene working and making repairs as of around 6:15 p.m., but no customers had lost service because of the damage, the spokesperson said.
