Marian Central boys golf advances to sectionals: Wednesday’s Northwest Herald roundup

Class 1A Johnsburg Regional: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Marian Central placed runner-up with a 312 to advance to the Timothy Christian Sectional on Monday, falling one shot short of regional champion Timothy Christian (311). Johnsburg (331) placed sixth.

Marc Cheng and Luca Kittel tied for fourth individually with 76s. Colin Kowalsky (79) took ninth and Harrison Graff (81) was 16th.

Johnsburg’s Jacob Smith finished seventh with a 77. Nate Frost shot an 83 but missed qualifying in a seven-golfer playoff for the final two spots.

Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional: At Sandy Hollow in Rockford, McHenry just missed advancing as a team to Monday’s Buffalo Grove Sectional with a 317. The Warriors were one shot shy of the third and final team qualifying spot, which went to Grant (316).

McHenry’s Alex LaShelle finished second individually with a 74 to move on. Currie also advanced with a 75, finishing third.

Class 2A Belvidere Regional: At Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove, Woodstock finished fourth with a 346, six shots behind Freeport for third. Woodstock North (351) took fifth, Marengo (364) was sixth and Harvard (374) was seventh.

Woodstock North’s Alex Cohen had an 82 to place sixth and advance to Monday’s Rockford Guilford Sectional. Also advancing for the Thunder was Tristan Schaffer (14th, 86).

Ryan Murray shot an 83 and took eighth to lead Woodstock. Also qualifying for sectionals for the Blue Streaks were Colin Karner (19th, 87), Nick Erickson (22nd, 88) and Simon Baker (22nd, 88). Russell Baughman shot a 90 but missed qualifying in a three-golfer playoff for the last spot.

Harvard’s Wyatt Stott (86) placed 14th to advance. Moving on for Marengo were Alex Johnson (24th, 89) and Michael Gieseke (25th, 90). Max Broughton also tallied a 90 but missed qualifying in a playoff.

Class 2A Lake Forest Regional: At Lake Bluff Golf Club, Matthew Rupnik had a 97 to lead Richmond-Burton, but no Rockets advanced to sectionals. R-B (398) took 10th as a team.

Girls volleyball

Woodstock North d. Plano, 25-19, 25-19: At Plano, Jenna Johnson had 10 kills and an ace to help the Thunder stay unbeaten in the Kishwaukee River Conference. Gabby Schefke contributed 19 assists and three kills for North (14-5, 9-0).

Johnsburg d. Sandwich, 25-13, 25-14: At Sandwich, Adelaide Bruns had 18 assists and four digs to lead the Skyhawks to a KRC win. Kaia Sasak had seven kills and Alexis Sweetwood added four kills for Johnsburg (13-10, 6-3).

Richmond-Burton d. Harvard, 25-12, 25-13: At Harvard, Dani Hopp had six kills and Daniella Mazzola posted five kills and four aces as the Rockets cruised in a KRC match. Josie Franckowiak recorded 10 assists for R-B (17-8, 8-1). For Harvard, Ella Martin had five kills and Madison McDonough added three kills for Harvard.

Marengo d. Woodstock, 25-11, 25-12: At Marengo, the Indians improved to 10-17 overall and 5-4 in the KRC with a win over the Blue Streaks. Ellie White finished with eight digs, Ava Brown had six aces, Elina Kirchhoff had eight assists and Marlee Gordon had seven kills.

Boys soccer

Woodstock North 1, Richmond-Burton 0: At Woodstock, the Thunder advanced to the title match of the KRC tournament with the shutout win against the Rockets.

Harvard 3, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, the Hornets will face Woodstock North in the KRC title game after the shutout win.

Marian Central 2, Winnebago 0: At Winnebago, Jacob Schug and Luke Aragona scored for the Hurricanes won for the first time this season. Dustin Emmert had 17 saves for Marian (1-6).

Girls tennis

Woodstock North 4, Johnsburg 3: At Woodstock, Katelyn Baker (No. 1 singles) and Hannah Reinhard and Maren Filetti (No. 2 doubles) each won to lead the Thunder to a KRC win against the Skyhawks. Reinhard and Filetti won their match 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.

Also winning for North were Maya Villalva and Arabella Richer (No. 2 doubles) and Stef Vanderstappen and Lia Hyrkas (No. 4 doubles).

Charlie Eastland (No. 2 singles), Allison Shaver (No. 3 singles) and Brooke Butler and Devynn Michel (No. 3 doubles) picked up wins for Johnsburg.
