A crash involving an overturned semi and a car left two drivers with injuries and shut down Route 176 between Haligus Road and Briarwood Drive, north and west of Crystal Lake.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert about 8 a.m. advising drivers to avoid the area until further notice.

At the scene, a truck could be seen on its side next to what appeared to be its spilled cargo. A damaged white sedan also sat on the bed of a tow truck.

The Crystal Lake Police Department and the Fire Rescue Department responded to a call at 7:24 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Route 176 and Haligus Road for a reported two-vehicle crash with injuries, according to a Crystal Lake Police Department news release.

A preliminary investigation found a semi-truck was driving east through the intersection when it “collided with a sedan” traveling north, police said. The semi-truck then rolled over, spilling its load of gravel onto the road.

Both drivers were taken with injuries that are believed to not be life-threatening, according to the release.

The driver of the semi-truck, an Elkhorn, Wisconsin, resident, was cited with disregarding a traffic signal.

A portion of Route 176 was closed to traffic while emergency crews were on the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department. Police asks anyone with information on the crash to contact them at 815-356-3620, or by sending anonymous tips by texting the word CLPDTIP along with information to 847411.
