A Spring Grove man was killed and two other people were injured Friday evening in a crash in the 100 block of Main Street near Spring Grove.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office on Monday said a 61-year-old Spring Grove resident was pronounced dead at the hospital later; he was not named.

A preliminary investigation indicated a Volvo was heading east on Main Street and, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line as it approached a curve in the road and collided with a westbound Cadillac Escalade.

The sheriff’s office said the front left tire of each vehicle “struck in an offset, head on crash.” The Volvo came to rest on the south shoulder area, while the Cadillac ended up in a ditch, according to the release.

The driver of the Volvo was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and was later pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

A 55-year-old Spring Grove woman and 52-year-old man, the driver and passenger of the Cadillac, were also injured the crash and were also taken to the McHenry hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash occurred on Main Street east of Villa Vista and first responders were called to the scene just before 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Air bags deployed in each vehicle; the driver and passenger of the Cadillac were wearing seat belts, while the Volvo driver was not, the sheriff’s office said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.
