Multiple school districts across the McHenry County area announced late Monday that classes have been canceled for Tuesday due to the bitter cold and below-zero windchills expected throughout the region.

The National Weather Service put much of northern Illinois under a cold weather advisory, beginning at 9 p.m. Monday night through noon. Lows are expected to fall at 8 below, with windchills forecast to reach 25 to 30 below zero.

At those temperatures, frostbite can set in to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, according to the weather service.
