DeKALB – DeKalb voters flocked to the polls Tuesday to decide who will next sit on the DeKalb School District 428 Board of Education, choosing among seven candidates for four four-year seats.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. Voters should remember that results aren’t certified for two weeks and write-in results won’t be known Tuesday.

The race featured incumbent Samantha McDavid and newcomers Vanta Bynum, Steve Byers and Christopher Boyes. Also in the race are Eric Larsen, incumbent David Seymour and Howard Solomon, all of whom are write-in candidates. Solomon previously served a term on the school board from 2015 to 2019.

Samantha McDavid said she is pleased with how Election night went.

“I think the early results are pretty indicative of what was expected with four names on the ballot,” McDavid said. “Although without the official results, it looks like there are several write-ins, so it’ll be interesting to see what that final result is.”

As of 10:30 p.m. with 65 out of 65 precincts reporting Tuesday, Byers has garnered the top votes so far with 1,887 votes. McDavid followed with 1,604 votes so far. Boyes has so far received 1,348 votes. The status of the remaining seats on the board remain up in the air as there are three write-in candidates in the field, and there results won’t be known until two weeks post-election.

McDavid said she would be excited to get back to work if she’s reelected to the board. She said she feels the community’s vote is a stamp of approval for the work she’s done.

“I do feel like I have some support in the community and I think that’s showing up in the unofficial election results so far,” McDavid said. “I consider that a great honor to be able to have the opportunity to serve again and continue some of the work that I’ve been part of.”

Board members Sarah Moses and Jeromy Olson did not seek reelection to the board.
