BATAVIA – A Berwyn man was charged with reckless driving after a crash in which his vehicle struck one curb, then another, then skidded out of control and went backward, according to a Batavia police report.
According to court records, Alfredo Guzman, 20, of the 1900 block of Gunderson Avenue 1, Berwyn, also was charged July 24 with underage possession of alcohol, improper lane use, possession of adult use marijuana in the passenger area of a vehicle, speeding 35 miles an hour over the posted speed limit and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
According to the report, about 7 p.m. July 24, police were called to Hart Road and Bailey Drive for a report of a crash.
Police found Guzman’s 2007 gray Infiniti G35 in the parkway on the east side of Hart Road facing south, the report stated.
The car’s front passenger wheel was completely stripped from the car and found laying in the roadway, the report stated.
The rear passenger wheel was still intact but the tire was flat and off the wheel rim, the rear bumper was laying in the roadway, and Guzman was outside of his vehicle “jumping up and down, punching the ground,” the report stated. Guzman’s “eyes were very red, bloodshot and watery and he was crying intensely.”
It appeared that the Infiniti left the roadway, struck the curb on the east side of the street with the passenger side wheels, drove up into the grassy parkway, then drove back onto the roadway, skidded out of control and crossed the center line, the report stated.
“The vehicle began to turn 180 degrees at that point and then struck the curb again,” the report stated. “The vehicle jumped the curb and was continuing backward (northbound) through the parkway, sideswiping a utility pole and finally coming to rest in the parkway facing (southbound) just south of Bailey Drive.”
Long scratches on the driver’s side front and rear doors were consistent with striking the utility pole, and the front passenger and rear side air bags had deployed, the report stated.
“After speaking with Guzman and witnesses, it was clear that Guzman was operating his vehicle with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of the public,” the report stated.
Police found an open bottle of tequila in the trunk, the report stated, but noted that Guzman’s pupils were normal and showed no signs of impairment.
Guzman was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 10.
