The heat Sunday didn't stop people from filling Hopkins Park in DeKalb to celebrate Juneteenth. The event commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas were told they were free on June 19, 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. DeKalb's celebration included games, vendors, dancing and more.

The DeKalb farmers market opened for its 30th season with a special grand ribbon cutting Thursday in Frank Van Buer Plaza in downtown DeKalb. The market runs on Thursdays through September, and offers an array of food, handmade crafts and goods, produce and other items from dozens of local vendors.
