Letter: Inspired by President Trump’s inauguration

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

As I continue to read about the inauguration of President Donald Trump, I am inspired.

Never in America’s nearly 250 years of existence has there been a president like Mr. Trump. This man was falsely accused of being an agent for Russia while his family and his businesses suffered many unwarranted attacks of litigation.

He is the only U.S. president to be impeached twice and the one and only American president to be underhandedly convicted of a felony. As if that were not enough, he was the target of two assassination attempts. Despite everything, he fought his way back to the White House.

Life can be despairing at times. Fortunately, Mr. Trump continues to demonstrate to America, in a winning way, how to respond to discouragement and despair. Mr. Trump’s determined vow after being wounded in an assassination attempt was to roar, “Fight, fight, fight!” That courageous response exemplifies the fight-the-good-fight spirit.

On the subject of fighting the good fight, the great spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi encouraged us to endure by noting, “When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won.”

Much like Gandhi, our great leaders of the past have by example encouraged individuals to embrace a fighting spirit. Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. all traveled a wearisome and challenging trail. And yet they all soldiered on to victory. They have inspired many who live in this fallen and often despairing world to never give up and to resolve to fight the good fight.

Thank you to yesterday’s great leaders and thank you to today’s great leader, President Trump.
