Plano Library holding writing groups, craft classes in July

Plano Community Library District events happening this summer:

All ages

Summer Reading Program – Adventure Begins At Your Library: Starting Sunday, June 1, and ending Wednesday, July 31, reading enthusiasts can earn prizes based on how much they read. Participants will get a reading log to take home and earn a prize after six hours of reading or listening time. The more participants read, the higher their chances will be to receive prizes. Weekly trivia questions will also be available for another chance to win a prize.

Technology Help Desk: From noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 20, tech expert Joshua Carlson will be available at the library to assist attendees with questions regarding electronic devices. No registration is required and attendees are recommended to bring their devices for the best experience.

Painting with Petite Palette - “Sail to Sunset”: From 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 22, an artist from The Petite Palette will lead a class in creating an acrylic on canvas painting. This event is open to high school students and adults. A $15.00 fee must be paid at the time of registration.

Homeschool Families Meetup: Plano Library will host meetings for homeschooled families from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, in the library’s Meeting Room. All ages are welcome. Toys and games will be in the room for children to enjoy. Kids and parents must stay together. No registration is required.

Writers’ Group: For writers, novice or experienced, Plano Library will host a Writers’ Group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, July 25 and Aug. 8, in person or via Zoom. In-person attendees meet in the library’s Meeting Room. No registration is required. The Zoom meeting ID is 988 2555 0591 and the passcode is 048559.

Local Author Fair: From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 27, local authors will be at the library for readings and short talks. More than 10 authors will showcase their work. Books will be available for purchase and refreshments will be served.

Soap Making 101: From 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 29, Soapy Roads of Lombard will provide an introduction to natural soap-making in the library’s Meeting Room. Attendees will make their own melt and pour soap bar using natural ingredients with zero waste. This event is open to adults. A $5 fee must be paid at the time of registration. Crafts to Go - Pressed Flower Bookmarks: On Thursday, Aug. 1, there will be free craft kits for high school students and adults at the library. Kits are given on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

Blood Drive: From 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, individuals can donate their blood in the library’s Meeting Room. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation, sign up at the library or at versiti.org.

New Life for Old Bags: From 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 10, individuals can help turn plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. For more information, contact Ceil Carey at jackandceil@att.net or 708-846-1704. No registration is required.

Knit and Crochet Group (via Zoom): From 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday, Plano Library hosts an informal group focused on knitting and crocheting projects. The group may discuss different types and colors of yarn and can help each other with new or tricky patterns. No registration is required. The Zoom meeting link is available on the Programs page of the library’s website at planolibrary.info.

Knit & Crochet Group (in person): From 4 to 6 p.m. every Friday, Plano Library hosts a Knit and Crochet Group led by crochet artist Karen Perez in the library’s Lower Level Meeting Room. The group allows those interested to knit and/or crochet with others or learn to knit and/or crochet. Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.

Kids’ programs

Chicken Storytime: From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, children ages 3 to 12 can listen to chicken stories and meet silkie chickens in the library’s Meeting Room. Suzanne Waldrop, owner of the silkies, will answer questions about taking care of chickens. Attendees will have a chance to pet the chickens, if they’d like. Children younger than 6 must come with an adult. Registration is required.

Books and Badges: From 2 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, emergency personnel will take turns reading books. After, children will be able to go outside and see police and fire department vehicles. This event is for children 4 and older. Children younger than 6 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.

Messy Munchkins: From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. or 6 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, Miss Christine will lead an event in which children can play with shredded paper, rice sensory bins, a small ball bit and a messy art station. This is a child-directed program for ages 0 to 6, with an adult. Registration is required.

We’re Having a Cat Party: From 2 to 3:15 p.m. or 6 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, there will be cat-themed games, cat trivia, cat crafts and cat books at the library. No actual cats will attend. This event is for independent children ages 5 to 10 without an adult. Registration is required.

Create Art with Petite Palette - Pikachu: From 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, an artist from The Petite Palette will lead a class in creating an acrylic on canvas painting. This event is for independent students ages 6- to 2, without an adult. A $5.00 fee must be paid at the time of registration.

Bookworms: From 5 to 5:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, children entering grades first through fourth, without an adult, can go to the library for a healthy snack and craft, book talk and discussion on what books are interesting to read. This program is for all levels of readers. Registration is required.

Pizza & Pages: From 5 to 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, children entering grades sixth through ninth can have some pizza and discuss a book. Attendees read the same book before the meeting for discussion. Registration is required.

Sounds Fun: From 2 to 2:45 p.m. or 6 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, children ages 3 to 6, with an adult, can enjoy a rhyming book and explore letter sounds and prewriting skills. There will be a variety of phonic stations for self-paced exploration. Registration is required.
