The Bureau Valley Storm seventh-grade girls basketball team took two steps closer to capture a Class 2A IESA State championship.
The Storm defeated Riverdale Washington 37-20 in the state quarterfinals with Ava Ferris scoring 11 points, Daelyn Benavidez 8, Tinley Yepsen 7, Mya Waites 6 and Kinley Gruber 5.
BV came back to edge Greenfield 16-14 in a low-scoring semifinal. Greenfield missed two free throws with 6.8 seconds left. Ferris led BV with six points.
The Storm (23-1) will meet undefeated Mt. Sterling Brown County (25-0) for the state title at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Brown County beat Glasford Illini Bluffs 38-18 in the semifinals and Bloomington Corpus Christi 43-25 in the quarterfinals.
In Class 3A state quarterfinals down the road at Auburn High School, Princeton Logan lost to Hillsboro 21-17. Abby Michlig led the Lions (17-4) with 14 points.
