IHSA member schools voted by a narrow margin in December 2018 to abandon conferences for high school football in favor of a district model, which will go into effect for the 2021 season.

Prior to the 1974 Illinois high school football season, the first to implement an IHSA playoff, there were always claims to the state championship and they were ... well, mythical.
