LAKE FOREST — The Bears started draft weekend by adding an offensive weapon for their new coaching staff on Thursday night.

Bears Ryan Poles gave new head coach Ben Johnson a new playmaker when he drafted Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the No. 10 overall pick. Loveland was a playmaker for the Wolverines that Johnson believed could be used the same as Lions tight end Sam LaPorta.

Now Poles will continue boosting the roster the rest of the weekend. He could continue to bolster the offensive and defensive lines. Or Poles could add an offensive or defensive playmaker.

Shaw Local will be covering all things Bears throughout the three days of the draft. Check back here for live updates.

How the NFC North drafted

After the Bears drafted at No. 10, the rest of the NFC North teams made their additions later in the first round Thursday night.

The Packers added to their receivers room by selecting Texas’ Matthew Golden at No. 23. Despite only having four selections in this year’s draft, the Vikings stayed at No. 24 and drafted Ohio State offensive guard Donovan Jackson.

The Lions boosted their defensive line by selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.

Giants trade back in to draft Dart

After drafting Abdul Carter at No. 3, the Giants traded back into the first round to draft a quarterback. The Giants traded No. 34 (second round), No. 99 (third round) and a 2026 third-round pick to the Texans for No. 25.

The Giants used No. 25 to draft Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart. He became the second quarterback taken in the draft after the Titans selected Cam Ward at No. 1 overall.

Three offensive tackles go early

Three of the top offensive tackles went in the first nine picks of Thursday’s first round.

The Patriots took the top prospect when they selected LSU’s Will Campbell at No. 4. The Jets bolstered their offensive line when they took Missouri’s Armand Membou at No. 7 and then the Saints decided to go with a tackle too, selecting Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.

With three offensive tackles off the board, the Bears went with an offensive playmaker with their selection.

Five offensive linemen were selected in the first 18 picks. The Cowboys took Alabama guard Tyler Booker at No. 12 and the Seahawks drafted North Dakota State guard Grey Zabel at No. 18.

Bears draft Colston Loveland

The Bears drafted Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the No. 10 pick.

At 6-foot-6 and 248 pounds, Loveland became a top pass-catcher for Michigan. He started 24 games over three seasons for Michigan, helping the Wolverines win a national championship a couple seasons ago.

Loveland led the team with a single season tight end record 56 receptions, 582 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He was a finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top end.

Graham, Jeanty off the board

Two more major targets for the Bears are off the board.

The Browns selected Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham at No. 5 and the Raiders drafted Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. There had been some rumors earlier in the day Thursday that the Bears might move up for Jeanty. Instead, they didn’t trade up.

Now the question remains whether the Bears still stay at No. 10. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Panthers were open to trading the No. 8 pick.

Top four picks go as expected

The first four selections of the draft went as many expected, even though not many predicted a trade. The Titans drafted Cam Ward, the Jaguars took Travis Hunter, the Giants selected Abdul Carter and the Patriots drafted Will Campbell.

Now the Browns will decide how the draft plays out at No. 5.

Browns, Jaguars make trade

The draft finally had a first-round pick traded.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns traded No. 2, No. 104 (fourth round) and No. 200 (sixth round) to the Jaguars for No. 5 (first round), No. 36 (second round), No. 126 (fourth round) and a 2026 first round pick. The Jaguars moved up with new GM James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen wanting to make a splash in their first draft.

The Jaguars used the No. 2 overall pick to draft Colorado’s Travis Hunter.

The draft has started

The draft is officially underway.

The Titans are on the clock after commissioner Roger Goodell and some former Green Bay Packers came out onto the stage riding bikes. He thanked a huge crowd in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and declared the draft underway.

Latest trade news for No. 10 pick

Poles said that the draft could get wild when he met with reporters Tuesday. He didn’t say that he could be the one making it wild.

The Bears have been interested in trading up in the draft according to multiple reports. On Thursday hours before the draft, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that the Bears were making calls to trade up. She said teams believe the Bears had the intention of landing Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.

On Wednesday night, New York Daily News NFL columnist Pat Leonard reported that a league source said the Bears were looking to move up. He also reported that six teams in the top 10 ahead of the Bears were open to trading down.
