Suburban Life Female Most Valuable Athlete: Callahan Dunn, Lyons, swimming, senior

WHY SHE WAS SELECTED:

Dunn won four state swimming medals, including a state championship in the 200 individual medley, to lead Lyons to fourth place at the state meet.

Dunn talked about the state meet and more with Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge. Here is an edited version of the transcript.

Welge: What does it mean to put yourself in such select company, the third state champion in program history?

Dunn: It's pretty cool to be in that select group. At our pool, on the board we have all three state champions. To get on there is cool. For everybody to recognize you, the whole swim community has been so supportive of me. It's awesome to receive that recognition.

Welge: What's your best swim stroke?

Dunn: My best event is probably the 200 IM, that's all my strokes, but what is probably my best stroke is the breaststroke. That's when I try to make my move in races.

Welge: Can you explain how grueling the 200 IM is to people who don't swim?

Dunn: It's probably if not the hardest one of the hardest. You have to be able to perform at your best in every single stroke. You have to have the endurance, but you also have to have the speed. It's a mixture of all that you have to have in swimming in one race.

Welge: What made you decide to commit to Wisconsin to swim?

Dunn: It was last February that I made my verbal commitment. I kind of narrowed it down quickly. I wanted to stay close. Once I visited, it was a perfect fit. The whole team dynamic, the coaches, they have a new coaching staff. It seemed like a program on the rise that I wanted to be a part of.

Welge: Do you have a role model that you look up to?

Dunn: Probably my sister, Mackenna Dunn, she's a senior at Rhode Island. She started swimming a lot and I liked watching her. She passed along her knowledge of swimming to me. I liked watching her and being around the pool and continued swimming.
