New Jersey man charged with class X felony for possession

MORRIS - A Grundy County grand jury indicted Stewart Alvarez, 26, of Patterson, New Jersey, for unlawful possession of more that 5,000 grams of cannabis with intent to deliver after his vehicle was stopped on I-80 on Oct. 6.

He was pulled over for failure to signal, according to Sheriff Kevin Callahan.

He refused to give permission to search the vehicle so the K9 unit was called in and hit on the vehicle for a controlled substance.

During the search, authorities found 2,500 grams of cannabis in five sealed bags, 7,500 grams of cannabis in 16 other sealed bags, 200 pieces of cannabis edibles weighing 8,000 grams, 900 grams of hash, and a large amount of money was seized.

Alvarez is currently free on a $10,000 cash bond. He was held on $100,000 and needed to put down 10 percent to bond out.

His first court date is Oct. 26.
