High school sports roundup: Lyons Township boys win track sectional, send 15 to state meet

Lyons Township’s boys track and field team turned in a dominant performance at the Class 3A Morton sectional May 20.

The Lions were champions in eight events, had three 1-2 finishes, and earned 15 total berths to the state meet that begins May 27 at Eastern Illinois University.

Connor Madell (4:24.49) and Vince Zona (4:24.91) in the 1,600-meter run, Danny Kilrea (9:15.68) and Matt Begeman (9:36.08) in the 3,200 run, and Thomas Saggau (44 feet, 3.75 inches) and Cavase Rutherford (43-9.75) in the triple jump were responsible for the Lions’ three 1-2 finishes.

Antwan Thigpen (10.72 seconds in the 100 dash; 50.30 seconds in the 400), Andrew Best (1:59.39 in the 800), Austin Iturralde (13-7 in the pole vault) and the 4x800 relay team of Best, Dan Palmer, Madell and Zona (8:03.04) also were event champions.

Jakob Mogorovic in the 300 hurdles (39.62), Nick Tegtmeier in the shot put (50-7), the 4x100 relay of Robert Hatch, Reggie Terrell, Thigpen and Kevin Minick (42.90) and the 4x400 relay of August Domanchuk, Best, Mogorovic and Thigpen (3:23.36) finished second to move on to state.

Fenwick

Anthony Pasquesi was the long jump champion with a mark of 21 feet, 6.5 inches at the Class 2A Glenbard South sectional May 20 to earn a state meet berth.

The 4x200 relay team of Lorenzano Blakeney, Greigory Dimailig, Matthew Lyons and Joshua Harris (1:33.95) and the 4x800 quartet of Alex Marks, Sean McGee, Joseph Cozzi and Joseph Wermes (8:14.91) were both second to move on to the state meet.

BOYS TENNIS

Lyons Township

Jack Bernstein won the singles title and Tanner Burke and Pat Caruso took the doubles title against teammates Demetri Triantafel and Matt Dickett as LT won the team title at its own sectional May 21.

Bernstein, Burke, Caruso, Triantafel and Dickett earned state tournament berths, as did freshman Max O’Malley, who finished third in singles. The state meet begins May 26.

The Lions scored 35 points in the sectional to finish ahead of Timothy Christian (20) and York (19).

GIRLS WATER POLO

Fenwick

Catie Wallace scored late in overtime to lift the Friars to a 13-12 win against Naperville Central on May 21 in the state championship match at Stevenson High School.

It was the ninth state title in program history and first since 2014 for Fenwick (30-5-1), which also topped New Trier (13-7 in the quarterfinals) and Stevenson (9-7 in the semifinals).

Lyons Township

In search of their second straight state title and third since 2012, the Lions lost 13-7 against host Stevenson in a state semifinal May 19. George Lundgren scored three times, and Nick Rosenberger made 13 saves for LT (30-3.)
