Tommy Helton had a pair of tight matches at the Class 3A Conant wrestling sectional, so he knew just how to handle the pressure in the 285-pound title match.
Helton earned a 1-0 win against Glenbard West’s Darien Kaufmann to win the sectional title. Helton won 3-2 on a tiebreaker in the quarterfinals and was a 1-0 winner in the semis.
The sectional title gave Helton a top-four seed at the state tournament, which began Feb. 18 and concludes Feb. 20 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Brian Nudera lost his opening match at 195 pounds before winning three times to reach a backdraw semifinal, but he came up just shy of joining Helton at state.
Austin Hoffman went 1-2 at 138 pounds at the sectional.
WRESTLING
Addison Trail
Karim Fuentes went 2-2, including a pin 46 seconds into his first bout, at 285 pounds at the Class 3A Conant sectional but did not advance to state.
IC Catholic
Joey Bianchi stepped to the top of the awards stand Feb. 13 at the Class 1A Plano sectional as the 106-pound champion.
Bianchi won 8-2 in his first match then pinned his semifinal opponent at the 1:32 mark to reach the finals, where he won 4-0. Bianchi moved on to the state meet, which began Feb. 18 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Brendan O’Brien went 2-2 at 145 at the sectional tourney with a pair of pins, but he did not advance to state. Pat Guinan won twice in the 170 backdraw but just missed out on a state berth.
Anthony Silva (160) also wrestled at the sectional for IC.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
IC Catholic
The Knights breezed past Lake View 61-17 on Feb. 17 in a semifinal of their own regional. They advanced to play Fenwick in the regional final at 7 p.m. Feb. 19.
Timothy Christian
The Trojans lost 49-28 against host Christ the King in a Class 2A regional final Feb. 11, but Grace Miller and Allison Zeilstra both advanced to the sectional in the 3-point shootout.
York
The Dukes fell 46-37 against St. Charles North on Feb. 16 in a regional semifinal game at Glenbard West to end their season.
GIRLS BOWLING
York
After winning a regional title, Emma Baubly, Dana Campo, Jessica Cwik, Lauren Gould and Carly Larux represented the Dukes at the Reavis sectional on Feb. 13, but they did not advance to the state tournament.

Addison Trail
Kennedy O’Neill and Terra Garcia represented AT at the Glenbard West sectional Feb. 11 but did not advance to the state meet.
